Getting Ready for our Adventure

Hello all,

Allan and I are getting ready for another travel adventure.  We are heading to Oslo on Tuesday September 19, arriving on Wednesday September 20.   We'll be spending one week in Oslo.  We then take the train to Stockholm on September 27 where we will be for eight days.  Neither of us have ever been to Norway or Sweden, so it will all be new for us.  We'll be staying in Airbnbs in both cities.

Our final destination is London.  We fly there on October 5.  We are staying in a VRBO near Borough Market.  We were last in London in 2019, so it will be a treat to return.  We already have theatre tickets to Dr. Semmelweis at the Harold Pinter Theatre with Mark Rylance, and tickets to The Father and the Assassin at the National Theatre.

We return to Toronto on October 12.   

We are looking forward to our "Nordic Adventure" and to returning to London.  Allan will be "Allan" for the duration of the trip.

Visit to the Amazing Vasa Museum

Monday October 2, started out cloudy with a bit of rain, but ended up with blue skies.  A high of 16C.   Our destination for the day was the Vasa Museum which is located on the island of Djurgården, about an hour walk from our apartment.  We decided to walk, rather than take a complex mix of Metro and bus.  We would of course make stops along the way. First stop was Vete-Katten, the buzzy bakery and café, to pick up a cinnamon and cardamon bun. Outside Vete-Katten (founded in 1928) Take out counter with freshly baked treats We have learned the importance of fika in Sweden. While fika is often translated as "a coffee and cake break", it is much more than that.  It is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture.  Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day.  It is a time to socialise and catch up with friends and colleagues.  Fika cannot be experienced at your desk by yourself...

Birthday in Stockholm, Free Tour, City Museum and Awesome Dinner

Thursday September 28 was Allan's birthday.  It was a beautiful sunny day with a high of 19C.  Our first destination was the Free Walking Tour.  Our meeting spot was the Metro station in Gamla Stan, the Old Town, which is on a small island with narrow streets and very old buildings, a number of which are unchanged from medieval times.  It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Europe.  The Old Town dates from the 13th century, but most buildings are from the 1600s and 1700s.  Sculpture outside the Metro Station- Familjegrupp View across the water Our guide was Linda, an American married to a Swede, who has lived in Stockholm for 14 years.  She is a teacher as well as doing the guide gig.  She sang Happy Birthday in Swedish to Allan and a young guy on the tour who was turning 15.  I haven't figured out putting videos in the blog, so no singing. We walked down to the water and Linda pointed out one of the few industrial buildings still stand...

Design Museum- Last full day in London

Wednesday October 11was a mainly cloudy day with a bit of rain in the evening.  First rain in London! High of 21C. Our destination was the Design Museum on Kensington High Street.  On the way to the Tube, we walked by the street vendors a few minutes away having a busy lunch hour. Salad guy More food booths- we counted around a dozen Tables for eating too We decided it was easier to walk across London Bridge and take a direct route on the Circle Line to the Kensington High Street stop. We arrived at the Design Museum which is located right beside Holland Park. Outside a separate small building with a gift shop and part of one of the exhibits. There was an interesting exhibit called Anti Furniture by  performance artist Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich (b. 1976, Moscow, presently lives between São Paulo and London).  Nine pieces of the performative sculptures were placed around the museum's atrium, mezzanine and grounds.  We first encountered two pieces on the grounds. ...
